I took this picture of Hein, Delta co 4/3 11th LIBs Kit Carson Scout in March, 1970 back at the motor pool at LZ Bronco. e was very good, spoke great English and did his best to keep us out of harms way. On April 2, Delta and 2 other companies met up and utilized an existing NDP. A command detonated bomb killed 7 and wounded over 20. My LT, Steve Shackleford had his lower leg shattered and he was flown to the 27th Surgical in Chu Lai. The rest of this story is Steves account as told in 1995: Steve was left outside basically to die while the less wounded were taken care of. When he came to, he started screaming about his leg and that he needed help. The Doc said there was little to do with Steves insides all over his chest. Steve said he was fine from the waist up so he was rushed inside, stabilized, and flown to Japan. It was later determined that the mess on his chest was the remains of Hein,our KCS, who had been standing next to Shack at the moment of detonation. Hein probably save Shacks life that day. Please, no comments on using existing NDPs. We knew it was wrong but orders were orders. Thanks.
