I travel by myself all the time; road trips, plane trips...a trip is a trip. But, I havent been overseas since 2003. That trip was to South Africa and Kenya and although I went by myself, once I got there, the Safari Tour Guide was in charge of my transportation and safety. The only time Ive traveled to a foreign country and been 100% on my own was in 2001 when i went to Ireland. They speak English in Ireland. I rented a car. I ate bangers & mash and drank Guiness. I was a little out of my element but Id done a lot of research before going there and only had a few setbacks....all in all, a fun trip. Now, Im going traveling again....solo travel to a foreign country, only this time, English is not the dominant language and I will not have a car. Im going to have to negotiate my way through the Madrid metro system to the Renfe train station to get to Pamplona, at which point, Ill be afoot. The bulls will not be running while I am in Pamplona (in case you wondered). I will start walking from Pamplona but by Viana, will need take a bus since I only have time to walk about 125 miles of the Camino. From Triacastela, I will be afoot into Santiago de Compostela. Im trying to retain my sense of adventure and excitement...and it will come back to me once I get there. Right now, though, Im wondering: What have I gotten myself into? You know how the best way to overcome a fear is to face it? Good grief. Sometimes I wish I were more cowardly.
