I try all morning and early afternoon to make an international payment through online banking - it freezes on the confirmation page each time. Check account, nothing’s been taken. That’s lucky. After fourth time of unsuccessfully trying I engage someone on the companys web chat. I explain. He types. He proceeds to tell me how to figure out my IBAN number. I don’t need my own IBAN number, I’m making a payment to someone abroad. You are right Katie, you dont need your own IBAN number. Try another browser. Will another browser actually work seeing as I’ve not encountered this problem before whilst doing online transactions? I don’t know Katie, but I urge you to try this link. (The link he provides doesn’t work.) I only use one browser and will have to download another, so I will do this on my own time. Is there a telephone banking number I can call to make this payment over the phone? Of course, here it is. Disconnect. I call the number. It rings for 15 minutes unanswered. Hang up. I find the local branch number to call to see if I can do this payment it instore. I ring the number. It’s the same as the last one. Someone answers eventually. I explain everything so far. They put me through to International Telephone Banking. I explain everything so far. They can help me. I have to explain what I’m trying to achieve (“I’m paying money from me in the UK to someone else in the Czech Republic…”). I go through a tonne of security clearances. Then she’s asking for my details of my account that is in the Czech Republic. “No, I need to pay someone in the Czech Republic.” I’m told that I can’t pay a third party over the phone. I have to go online to do it, or instore. … “Is there anything else I can help you with Miss McKLkgijgkjgch?” (a common occurrence with my surname) “Well clearly not anymore.” I hang up. The cat I’m looking after gently, almost apologetically, punches me on the cheek. I sit, phone in hand.
