I try to stay positive in light of events like this. But I feel - TopicsExpress

I try to stay positive in light of events like this. But I feel compelled to post this time. I ask you to read on.... Yesterday, I learned that the Japanese herded dolphins into a cove to do the same thing. Two such stories in so short a time move me to speak. I ask also when will we make real change? The suffering of so many beings at the hands of callous humans is hard to fathom sometimes. Just hard. The weight of it is so heavy. Its not just dolphins. The developed world, especially post-WWII, seems to have lost some of its soul. Please, lets stop our sanitized distancing and complacency about the welfare of our fellow beings. Learn from whence comes all we eat and the full story of all impacted; how they lived, and how they died. Its not much to ask to live well and die well. This isnt just about highly intelligent mammals terrorized and slaughtered on the other side of the globe. (Shocking words, yes, but not hyperbole. If it were us in their skin, Im pretty sure wed feel the same.) I try to bite my tongue and not say much, for fear folks will think Im proselytizing and dismiss such sentiments outright. I ask you, dont. Consider my thoughts here. Please learn about our food systems and big agriculture. Do I suggest big change in eating and buying habits? Yep. With all candor, yes. We can be part of change. This is not a predestined path we are on. And the changes we make may seem outside of the scope of our culinary norms. But then, the argument that whats normative is implicitly valid simply for being the norm is flawed. There are enough moments in history that prove it - the most obvious being the American system of slavery. Just because it existed for centuries didnt exactly make it right, or justifiable. The argument of the norm provides little substance on which to base a system of animal agriculture founded upon suffering, all because we have come to expect inexpensive food. Next time you spot a great deal in the grocery, please think on who bears the true cost. If you have read thus far, thanks. :-) And please do consider these thoughts, rather than maintaining a willful blindness so many of us have been lulled into by powerful ad campaigns. There are many myths promulgated claiming they are fact. We have more access to information than ever. Question those assertions and slogans that are so common, they are nearly cliche. I have learned a lot in the past few years and come to my path through that knowledge. I just wish others would, too. Please join me here. Even if its only taking a step or two in this direction. :-)
