I try to tell myself that they mean well, but every time I decide - TopicsExpress

I try to tell myself that they mean well, but every time I decide to have my daughter wear an afro, I have a sister approach me about teaching me how to care for her hair or telling me that they can braid, and it digs at me every time. In case you didnt know, Im actually quite adept at caring for ethnic hair. From gauging porosity and implementing the appropriate care regimen (we currently use the LOC method with a once-per-week wash day and braid out into a protective style) to cornrowing, twisting, ponytails, and even styles shes not old enough for yet (I am fairly good at singles with hair added, jenni locs which are faux dreadlocs made with yarn, bantu knots, sengalese twists, wraps, and so much more. Heck, I even do a pretty decent sew-in and if you know me, you know I was solely responsible for the start and maintenance of my husbands long dreads for years) I also know when its time to give her hair a rest, hence the occasional afro. I just feel like, if I was black and walked around with Sias hair in a fro, no one would approach me trying to advise me on her hair; They assume I dont know how to care for her, and thats frustrating.
