I try very hard not to complain on Facebook. To me, it should be positive and fun otherwise why would I go to the site and not just read the bad news on CNN. But today Ive reached my positive limit. Yesterday the CT Dept of Ag animal control officer visited our farm. They received a complaint and were required to investigate. Apparently, to a particular observer, my alpaca were in mud with no shelter and an animal was blanketed one day and missing the next. To everyone who is not a farmer, mud happens!!! And yes we have shelters for our alpacas but they prefer being outdoor in March and April. Their fiber is over 5 inches long and they are sweating when we are jacketed. And lastly, a Suri was jacketed before an April storm and the jacket was removed the next day so the Suri did not overheat. Note to everyone: ask first before you report a farm to the state. Needless to say, we passed the inspection with flying colors. Our herd is happy, healthy, and a joy to Vern and I. However, its events like yesterday that make farming more and more difficult. Our goal is to preserve the land we are on in its original agricultural state, but unrealistic complaints make it more difficult for farmers to maintain this type of commitment.
