I turned on the news last night for a few minutes, which I never - TopicsExpress

I turned on the news last night for a few minutes, which I never do anymore. It hasn’t changed. Death, destruction, manipulation, revenge. The news media outlets thrive because they deliver what the majority of their viewers covet. In church this past Sunday, we had to stand in the back because the pews were full. Behind the alter where the services were underway is a large cross on a bright wall. Whenever I found myself watching the people entering and leaving the chapel, or when the children playing in the aisles caught my eye, I would notice that when I blinked, I would see an impression of the cross (a high-contrast optical illusion). It caused me to think about how when we are distracted by the things we encounter in life, it’s good to have had our sights recently fixed on something positive and reassuring. It helps maintains a proper perspective on what we encounter and how we observe others. It concerns me, deeply, about how the media (movies, television, games, news) keeps death, destruction, manipulation, and revenge in the public’s direct line of sight. Because when they look away and take in what’s going on around them in their personal lives, they won’t be able to shake those negative reflections. And our actions often reflect our observations. It’s taken me quite some time to realize that what I watch, and what I listen to, affects the way I see things around me—whether I’m aware of it or not. And so now at every level (food, thought, entertainment) I have come to consider the potential impact of what I choose to consume.
