I typically stay away from political and topical stuff, and this is no different. Heres why I refuse to comment on the Michael Brown situation: No matter what camp you fall into, chances are youre making a huge, unfounded assumption. If you believe Darren Wilson is innocent based on the presented facts of the case, then youre making a huge assumption that police will not embellish the facts of a case to protect their own, especially when there is a gray area, and race is involved. There is a long history of white cops (really cops of any race) playing judge, jury, and executioner in cases where African-Americans are involved. We know for a fact this has happened in the past, and it still happens today. To deny that this still happens today would be delusional. Particularly in a case where the evidence is circumstantial and most of what we have to go on are the officers personal injuries, and his personal statement. This happens regardless of race by the way. However, if you believe unquestionably that Darren Wilson is guilty, youre also making a huge assumption. no matter how much you might know about Michael Brown, we can never know what happened that lead to Michael Browns death and whether or not he did in fact provoke Darren Wilson to the point of using deadly force. Very few of us have been a police officer and had to face situations that may or may not result in our death as part of our duty to society. Because there is a history of white cops abusing their power with respect to African-Americans, its tempting to treat this as one of those cases because it does look a lot like that and the rage from previous cases is still fresh. We must not presume to punish Officer Wilson as well as the town of Ferguson because of past injustices. But because we can never know what happened based on the evidence, I find it presumptuous, immature, and foolhardy to even comment. I do know two things. Most people are ignoring the every day experiences of the opposing party, the nuances of such and how that can influence ones world view before jumping to judgement. And finally, the rioting in Ferguson is pointless. There is no good served from those events. It just exasperated the problem. I eagerly wait for a leader in that community to step up, and lead Ferguson and the surrounding areas towards a more constructive solution and use of people and resources. Thats all I care to say on the topic.
