I understand people liking Saint James Matamoros, but... the question is forever begged: why believe a myth? Im not saying this like I dont believe he still has a place as a symbol of Spanish Identity, but we at least have to admit hes only that: a symbol. The Battle of Clavijo never took place. The oldest surviving record of the battle is dated 300 years after the battle took place. Even then, Saint James is still the patron of the Spanish, but as far as history - Catholic and non - can attest, he never appeared on a white horse slaying Moors by the score. I see no reason to not produce art of him as a symbol of Spains militant faith, but promulgating the story as anymore than inspiration in the same way the Song of Roland or any of the stories of King Arthur just isnt cricket.
