I understand why my grandparents and parents have White peoples - TopicsExpress

I understand why my grandparents and parents have White peoples names. I understand that many of our grandparents had these White peoples names imposed on them by the home affairs system under the apartheid regime. Their names were altered, misspelt or altogether changed. I understand that many of our parents were named by our grandparents, often after the White madam or baas that they (grandparents) were working for. And I understand that some in our generation are products of parents who were afflicted with the rawness of recency of the apartheid regime. But what I cannot comprehend, what I simply fail to understand is why anyone giving birth post the dawn of the millenium would give their child a White name. Why would someone of my generation name their daughter Jennifer, Susan, Priscilla, Diana, Rose etc, or their son Michael, Ashley, Christopher, George and so on and so forth and stuff like that? We are a generation that has the duty to resist this systematic assault on our beautiful AND meaningful indigenous names. And we do have beautiful names: Daluxolo, Masingita, Matlotlo, Nomathamsanqa, Liepollo, Lonwabo, Zimkhitha, Galaletsang, Thilivhali, Motheo...I can go on and on. So why do we want to raise little Susans and Georges? Why? Steve Biko didnt die for this! #BringBackOurAfrikanNames
