I used all the onion skins saved for over a year to dye this soft sculpture of two women, “The Conversation”. The postures of these characters was based on my most common memories of my mother and my aunt in earnest conversations during our frequent family get-togethers. Before dyeing the cotton muslin, I separated the three different colors of onion skins I had saved, from yellow to dark red, and dip dyed the surface designs. I used cotton twine for my aunt’s hair. The process is the same as dyeing with any natural dye substance: walnuts, dried marigolds, mushrooms, etc. I did the dyeing and heat setting, after I had already sewn the figures, but before I stuffed and weighted them. Each figure is aprx. 22-26 inches tall.
