I used to like going up to Travis AFB to go to the club, which had live music, and watch the C-5As take off and land. I liked going to lake Berryessa to drink beer, swim, etc. I went to the NAPA valley road and watched the 1984 Summer Olympics torch being carried to LA. I went up further north, to Clear Lake, on a three day weekend, for camping and fishing. I liked hitting the wineries and taking the tasting tours (Christian Brothers was my favorite). I liked going to the Mare Island pier at night to fish, caught leopard sharks, sand sharks, tarpon, sturgeon and saltwater stripe--and all these fish were pretty small. I loved being duty driver on the weekend midwatches. I liked going to Frisco, to Fishermans Wharf, and people (read: weirdos) watching. I liked going to Berkeley, hollering at hippies, and buying music at this obscure music store (name, anyone?). I liked walking from to the exchange after class, buying Michelob and gedunk, having a couple while watching TV, then walking to the messdecks and having supper. Then back to the quad, studying, bike to the pier, drink beer and fish, back to the quad, finish studying, then hit the rack. No alarm clock necessary, the jarheads singing on their morning run woke us all up; it was very audible through the open windows. I went across the causeway on my 20th birthday to Fuzzys tattoo shop (first one on the first corner) and getting ink for my birthday. $70.00 for something that lasts a lifetime, a bargain. I could go on and on..... I LOVED that place. BTW, all the I statements above were normally carried out in the company of a good buddy or two, sometimes an Aussie, even.
