I used to run into this young woman on the bus several times a year. She seemed to have learning difficulties and often traveled with a teacher, who was helping her with homework, while they were commuting. She always looked a little sad and lost. 3 years passed, and this spring I saw her on a bus again, this time with a cute blond baby boy and a stroller. I was very happy for her until the moment an older woman complimented her child. He is such a cutie, doesnt look at all like you though. Takes after his daddy? I am a single Mom, have no idea where his Dad is, the girl replied, somehow unemotionally. The ride was too long, and the child started whining a bit. The girl didnt seem to have much of a contact with him, because he was just sitting next to her, and when he started crying, she didnt put him on her lap to comfort him. She just asked him to shut up several times and kept staring out of the window. When we reached the final stop, and all got out, she started assembling the stroller without looking at the child. I felt very worried, so I stopped for a moment, still keeping an eye on the boy. Suddenly he headed towards the road with traffic. I followed him and caught him right before he left the sidewalk. The Mom was still busy assembling the stroller, and wasnt looking. I was a bit shaken up, and took the boy back to her. Maybe you should pay attention where your kid is, I suggested. Yeah, she replied, grabbed him by the hand, put him in the stroller, and left, without even giving me a look. I always worry about her and the child, said a woman at the bus stop. I know she tries to be a good Mom, but its hard for her, and she doesnt seem to ever hold him or comfort him.
