I used to think that Kosher and Halaal meant only that certain, higher standards of hygiene had been adhered to in the packaging of meat. Do many of you know that those terms actually require, among others, for the animal to have been fully conscious at slaughter? Ive linked two (necessarily quite subjective) opinions from authorities on the respective religious rituals below. Everyone will make their own conclusions from there, either to appease themselves that slaughter and flesh eating is okay or that it is not. The reality of mass religious slaughter is that, just as with mass Western style slaughter, the kill line has to move so fast to meet our unconscious, thoughtless demands for flesh that there is no way that every religious slaughter happens as smoothly as the authorities try to depict in the links. Interesting also that the Jewish rabbi refers to vegetarianism as a higher form of eating.
