I used to work at the Conoco terminal at Oxspring but in 1968 I - TopicsExpress

I used to work at the Conoco terminal at Oxspring but in 1968 I was reassigned to their London HQ so I left Sheffield and settled in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, travelling into London by road every day. Some years later my wife and I divorced so I moved to the London Borough of Bexley where I remarried and still live. The last time I visited Sheffield was when my father died in 1997 and then I thought my ties with the city were finally severed. Until I discovered Pictures of Sheffield old and new. In the last ten days I have posted a few old photographs and a few comments. Its been a wonderful experience and I am truly amazed by the level of response. I have received hundreds of likes and many comments from people I never met. A few have even suggested that I should revisit Sheffield and, perhaps, reacquaint myself with the dialect. Its a tempting thought because I would love to meet all the people who have written on my posts. But its not quite as practical as it sounds so I have come up with a plan. And here it is: 1. The government must grant two extra days holiday to all Sheffielders and those who are domiciled elsewhere. These extra days will be tacked on to a standard summer Bank Holiday to make a nice break from work and allow time for recovery. 2. All firms in Sheffield will be compelled to grant their employees two days extra holiday - on full pay, of course. 3. All traffic movement will be suspended for the two days of celebration with the exception of buses and trams which will be allowed to operate normally except that all passengers will travel free. 4. Travel expenses for those Sheffielders who no longer live in the city will be picked up by the government after reducing the ludicrous amounts spent on foreign aid. 5. The people of Sheffield will be able to choose whether the best way to celebrate Sheffields history on this momentous occasion is by having multiple street parties or by taking over the whole city centre and surrounding streets and parks for one massive street party. 6. All food will be provided free by the large supermarkets and all drinks will be provided free by the breweries. 7. All contributors to Pictures of Sheffield will be able to meet, often for the first time, discuss the old and new times, and become firm friends for the rest of their lives. Ive probably missed some of the finer details in the planning but what do you think? Is two days enough? One final point: who is going to tell Nick Clegg to get this organised before he loses his seat?
