I usually listen to people blaming and criticising educators for not having the right skills to teach mathematics and science and they also blame learners who fail these subjects. This is very interesting because the reason why there is a shortage of maths and science teachers is because the very same critics ran away from these subjects when they were still in school and yet they expect miracles from the children and educators. The issue of maths and science is not new , it has always been like that even during apartheid. I passed my matric in 1986 and what is interesting is that at my school maths and science which I passed was taught by teachers from Zimbabwe and Ghana whilst Science was taught by Indians from India . Secondly , we were very few in those maths classes because the same critics who are vocal today ran away from those subjects. When you throw stones at teachers , you must first look at yourself. We are doing the samething many parents do today, they do not want their children to exercise the freedom of choice when it comes to careersor professions . Most parents want children to live their failed dreams and this is not fair. I know that I will be attacked but this is an honest truth. I am sure that more than 90% of those who blame children and teachers for maths and science is those who could not make it in the same subjects. Preaching like a crab which tells people to walk straight when it does not lead by example.
