I usually post what I have to say from my desk at home or at my usual corner table at Oasis Cafe and while I have an abstract sense of a wider audience, I suppose it never hits home to me that I am reaching real people outside of those I interact with here or in my small personal circle. Last night therefore was an enlightening experience for me when at several places that I stopped at I was approached by people whom I knew tangentially or not at all who either engaged me in discussion over some of the issues Ive highlighted or simply congratulated me and encouraged me to keep on going. I am not seen as a humble man but there are moments when Im truly humbled. Awards, grants, accolades, all that shit is just noise and certificates of achievement are useless and ephemeral as confetti when measured against a man offering you a beer, his hand on your shoulder and telling you what you have to say is relevant to him and his life. To all the people I have not yet met and who find whatever value in my words, the only thing I have to offer, Id like to say, Thank you for listening and I hope that someday I get to repay you by listening to what you have to say as well.
