I want to give a BIG thank you to everyone that donated their money to help make it possible for my daughter to go on her trip to New Jersey/ New York for the Dodge Poetry Festival. Please know that your donations went to the Creative Writing Department at Douglas Anderson HS as a whole. For those of you that do not know, these young ladies and men spent months putting their blood, sweat and tears into selling Peterbrooke chocolates, having yard sales, bake sales, selling dinner tickets, held silent auctions, hosted Homecoming and so much more. For those of you that we pestered with phone calls and text asking for donations or to buy something, thank you for returning the call and sending us your money. Marina, alone, raised over $600 because of you. As a whole, the students raised over $12,000. This means that ALL of the students that were chosen to go to The Dodge Poetry Fest will not have to pay for their plane tickets, hotel or the event. They even had funds left over for sight-seeing & other events. Writing and poetry may seem bleak to many of you but for the kids that major in Creative Writing, it is everything to them. These children will go on to be authors, poets, screenwriters, publicist, editors and teachers of a dying art form. So for them to be able to meet their favorite poet/ author is like you meeting your favorite actor. The above video (though short, shaky & cut off) is a little glimpse into what it means to them to take this trip. So, from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the students in Creative Writing, thank you, thank you, thank you---I love you all! And a special thanks to my husband who went to endless school meetings, directed traffic for hours at events, kept our kids safe, for loading and unloading countless items for fundraising—you’re the best and I love you!
