I want to mention, as I search for more of my maternal familys history, that my mother told me my grandfather and great grandfather built the stone wall surrounding Dukes East Campus. My great grandfather was Superintendent of Maintenance at Duke University for years and years, and from what I understand, he was very highly regarded. Mom communicated that upon his passing, so many Duke employees, laborers, physicians, etc., wrapped a long line around Clements Funeral Home for his showing. Most of the men in the family always worked at Duke. What I have been trying to research are the dates the wall was built. She said, It was your granddaddy that built the wall. Do any of you have any information regarding the wall and its erection? The reason I am coming to Growing up in Durham is because the family history on my mothers side is minimal. My mother was the only child of Ethel Gift and John Gift and my great grandfather was a John Gift as well. (I believe). Very sketchy family history. Just was wondering if you all had any information that might help provide a more fuller knowledge of this side of the family for me. Thank you in advance for any information you might have!
