I want to say some things about Networking, a vile mandate for people who have to sing for their supper, which I guess is most of us. I dont know about other people, but Networking for me means being released into a space with a bunch of successful, smart, competitive people who are wearing suits and sipping drinks. Youre supposed to think of a feeble reason to approach one of them, have some terrible conversation, exchange cards, and then make an even-more-awkward exit. Repeat. Its like dating, only briefer, and more horrible. Since I have a weak, chilly handshake and a tendency to mumble, Im going nowhere with this and we all know it. Nevertheless I feel obliged to show up and whack my head against this wall periodically. (I did talk to the acrobats, but not to very many of the business-casual-people you see here. Yet in spite of my deficiencies I somehow manage to make a living. This leads me to believe that the Networking thing might be kinda hooey.) Anyway I suggest to whoever might be listening that Networking could be organized, and timed, and have a referee, like speed dating. We could all meet each other, and do the handshake thing, and exchange cards (I forgot to bring cards to the boondoggle), and then go back to our rooms and watch baseball. I admit this would be less capitalistic, less wild-west, less shark tank than our current system. Efficient, though. Just sayin
