I want to share a story that Coach Steve Coley loved to tell. I heard him tell it on several occasions but loved it every time. Its a little lengthy, but worth the read. As most know, Coach played pro ball back in the 60s. He was a lead off hitter for a Pittsburgh Pirates minor league team. I think the year was 1965, and Coach Coley was chosen to play in the minor league all-star game. On game day, Coach was the lead-off hitter and on the mound was an unknown rookie by the name of Nolan Ryan. Coach dug deep in the box to crouch the plate. The pitcher went into his stretch....POP! Coach never saw the ball, he just heard the pop of the catchers mitt behind him. Coach awaited the call from the behind the plate umpire, which he never heard. Coach looked back and said, Whats the call Blue? The umpire responded, I dont know, sounded high! Coach always loved for people to ask, so how did you do against Nolan Ryan? Coach says he went 4 for 4, he had 4 at bats in 4 years. Thanks for taking the time to read this great story that Coach loved to tell. Going to tag a few of his players over the years so you guys can read it. RIP Coach!
