I want to share my friends perspective on this article. Facebook wont let me share it, just the link, so I had to copy and paste it: (the following from Heith A. Wetzler): So many mixed feelings about this. I find it odd that the only conceivable solution for this mother is that the government sponsor her. Not: promote policy to kickstart the economy so two job families arent necessary; not reduce taxes on income so take home pay increases; not increase the US trade and business environment to encourage competition and thus lower prices; not thankful fullness that she had NINE weeks already with her child... There was a time when women would give birth and immediately return to their work, in the homes, in the field. We shouldnt go back to that. Those women were forced to work, by the economics and social pressure of their society. Today, women are told that they are most feminine when they leave their babies with someone else to pursue an career. Today, we dont seem mind that we have to leave our kids, we just mind that no one pays us not to. Back then, women were forced to work to eek a bare survival. Today, families work multiple jobs to buy iPhones, nice clothes, new cars, a house with rooms that go unused for weeks, high speed internet, food food food! And etc. Im not saying: 1) women shouldnt work (or that they should work AND raise kids, or that they ONLY raise kids). 2) people shouldnt have nice or extraneous materials. I dont know this womans circumstance, I cant comment directly on her choices. But if she were me: 1) Isnt it true that personal responsibility matters; the lifestyles we choose matter, and we are responsible for them. I would evaluate my choices. 2) The solution to this plight is not government subsidy. I contend its a reevaluation of priorities and economics. 3) Perspective matters; we must consider progresss, not lament the lack of it. We must also consider how adopting these other countries models affects basic concepts of freedom and responsibility. Just because they are doing it, just because there is a perceived immediate benefit, does not mean the model is beneficial long term, enforcing good values.
