I want to share something...many of you dont know that I/we had a brother, who passed away when he was 13 and I was 9. He contracted spinal meningitis when he was 6 mos...okay, heres my story to share...back in 1987, I was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. Back then, you only got a need to know out of me, because it probably wasnt your business...and, if you were not Black, you didnt get that. Anyway, there was a young Caucasian Soldier, who I worked with...who had a new wife and baby. One day, I was in the office talking to him about how my brother contracted spinal meningitis at 6 months, and the doctor told my mother that it was just pneumonia and sent her home...because it seemed so similar at the onset. By the time she got him to the hospital, it had taken its toll in him...I did my best explaining what it does to the spinal cord and the brain..I told him that it left my brother stiff and an invalid. I didnt understand why, of all people, I felt the need to share this with him. I hadnt really shared this with many people or if any at all. Well, two weeks later, his 6 month old son was rushed to the Army hospital with a diagnosis of pneumonia. Then rushed to Duke with spinal meningitis. SPC Chandler later told me that when the doctor told them pneumonia, he thought of me. His son was in too much pain for that diagnosis. He asked them to check for meningitis, which was the true diagnosis. And, he was life-flighted to Duke Medical without anytime to spare. All he could tell me was that had I not told him about my brother, he probably would have lost his son. God will use us when He wants to and how He wants to. People have often asked me how do I go to work with a smile, even when I dont feel well...I remind them that I am Blessed and that you dont know who needs to see that smile. Someone could be contemplating suicide; however, that smile and a kind good morning, may have changed their mind because they saw something that you didnt see in that smile..God working.
