I want to thank all for you for being so supportive of Story, I am truly grateful for all the thought and love that went into your comments. I was quick to react and spoke to the Principal this morning. She was empathic and realized that there was indeed a ‘hole’ in her system. I also appreciate that she was straightforward about the criteria of earning an award and sadly Story didn’t reach any of the criteria. I do believe this is an excellent learning opportunity for both myself and Story and I have encouraged him to use this “bump in the road” as a motivator for his next school year. It also helped to start a conversation about setting goals and getting back on the horse. I’m not even sure I’m of the belief that every child should get an award; it could potentially lead to entitlement. I believe it should be more exclusive to the top 5 to 10% and not the top 95%. I also think it was an amazing learning opportunity for Story’s friends. Two of his best friends were sad for him and made him certificates declaring him a great friend. They learned that they had some power to bring good to a seemingly helpless situation. I’m so proud of them!
