I wanted to make this known in case any who read this, have dealt with or may have to in the future: In April of 2014, I was diagnosed with Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma. My mother , Betty was visiting & present at the initial diagnosis and unfortunately she took it harder than I. I was referred to an oncology surgeon at the UofA Med Center, who said I would need to have surgery and removal of 5/6 upper teeth and gum area and possibly some of the bone if needed. I now , being presented with his plan, realized that this was going to be a life altering procedure for me. I went home and as many times we do, felt like this was the biggest hill in life yet. I pulled it together in a few days and went to the U of A Cancer Center for a 2nd opinion. There, the Dr. suggested that I speak to a radiation oncologist as an alternative to this surgery. I had consultation with a group of oncologists along with a PET scan & MRI. I began radiation therapy in July and am now on my last 5 treatments. Although I have had some minor issues during this journey, the tumor has disappeared. The Doctor says everything is looking very well and he is amazed at the results. A final PET scan in Sep will determine if this is over.......for now. My appreciation to U of A Cancer Center doctors, nurses, techs, United Health Care , my Mother and God. Kevin :)
