John Byrne, the 2014 candidate for state Assembly, today placed blame on Democrat Assemblywoman Addie Russell for her part in supporting and defending Sheldon Silver, the longtime Assembly Speaker who was arrested earlier today on federal charges. Byrne contends that Russell, the benefactor of hundreds of thousands in campaign cash from Silver, continues to stand by the embattled Speaker during scandal after scandal. Byrne now questions Russell’s own ability to serve any longer following her latest statements. “Speaker Silver’s penchant for greed and power has tarnished the Assembly for decades, and his arrest earlier today confirmed that,” said Byrne. “There is no way the Assembly can function with this distraction looming, and it’s unfathomable that Addie Russell continues to support the most corrupt man in the State Capitol. Sheldon Silver has abused the public’s trust for decades, and it’s shameful that Addie continues to condone such behavior. “Ms. Russell’s credibility and mental fitness are highly suspect now, and I’m not sure she’s able to perform the duties of an elected official any longer when her judgment is this clouded. We deserve far better than Addie Russell.”
