I wanted to share this essay Nikki Nolan wrote about her experiences with our club. I am proud to say she is my daughter and more proud after reading the essay she wrote. While circling around the track, joyful faces are cheering me on. It’s hard to believe having this much fun could benefit the school of the blind and visually impaired. As the race ends, my team of four exits the tricycling area to cheer on the sidelines. The next competitors are from the school. Seeing their faces light up, while they whirl around the track, is the best part of the day. They do not mind having an escort running behind them to help guide the bikes on the right path; they are just thrilled to be there, having fun. Finding ways to help people is a big priority in my life. Through the Seymour Noon Lions Club, I have been able to participate in many activities. Throughout the year, I participate in Brians Trike Race with the school of the blind, working shifts at the Oktoberfest booth selling shirts and drinks, delivering fruit, and serving food at the Pig in the Park tractor show. These services have showed me how important it is for everyone to support their communities, and how even a little help can change lives. Helping other students see how wonderful these types of services are is easier than it sounds. Often when you have exciting, fun, rewarding events planned, students will volunteer on their own. You only need to advertise for what you are doing and to ask for help. Since most of the members of the lions club are at least fifteen years older than I am, they treat me differently. It is almost as if I have a club full of grandparents and parents showing me how to properly behave or sometimes, how not to behave. Over the past few years, they have proved to me how giving back to your community is so beneficial. The most important part of service, however, is to help people in need. And even when it is hard, as it often is, you have to stay motivated and keep trying. With college not so far off, I know i will be leaving these wonderful people behind. But with me, I take the knowledge they have given me and a drive for something more; to learn more on how to plan service events. To learn more about community involvement. And to learn more about people and communities in need and how to help them. Learning these things may be a struggle, but i know it will be worthwhile. -Nikki Nolan
