I wanted to share with all of you an Award presented to a very special Lady at the Board of Commissioners meeting on August 14th. Mrs. Mary Hill was presented the Award of Honor Medal that night. This Award is very special in that it is not only for Distinguished Service to the Law Enforcement Profession, but it is also called the Drew Comrey Medal. Drew Comrey was a young man who grew up with my son, and passed away as a young man from Cancer. His example, character, and humanity touched me in a way that I was moved to name this Medal for him. It is a special Medal, and Mrs. Hill is a special lady. When I started on the Police Department in 1988 she was our front desk receptionist. For the past 16 years she has been my Administrative Assistant. Mary is in her 29th year with our Police Department and during my entire tenure with the Police Department she has been a force in my life. Mary has worked with us through three Police Stations and I am the third Chief she has served. I feel the best way to share my feelings about Mrs. Hill and what she has meant to our Department and me personally can only best be shared in the speech I gave Thursday night. It is below: “When I think of Mary Hill, I think of a moving passage I once read and keep close to me: “Loyalty is a choice that only strong spirits have the courage to make”. Honestly, Mary is the heartbeat of our Department. For the past 17 years she has been my loyal confidant who does not point out where I stumble, or make light of when I am caught being human. No, she picks me up, makes me smile, and most importantly makes me feel special even when I don’t deserve it. Her work, her dedication and devotion to this Department and the Township is without equal. When I count my blessings, having Mary as my friend is one that glows the brightest. If you are related to Mary, a friend of Mary, a co-worker of Mary, or simply have crossed paths with Mary, then you need to consider yourself touched by an Angel. There is a Latin verse that speaks to what Mary has been in my life…..”Et Lux Tenebris Lucent”……..and the light shines in the darkness. Mary, thank you for touching thousands of citizens since you began with us in 1986. Congratulations on your Award. You are so deserving. Chief Martin
