I wanted to take a few minutes to provide a little more background on the purpose behind this project. Over the past year, I have been introduced to a lot of people in the LGBT community, and I have spent a lot of time listening to people about issues we face. The number one issue that cries out from all corners of the valley is that there is no unity. There is a lot of separation between various social groups, and theres not a lot of cooperation between people when it comes to fundraising for programs that could really help the LGBT community. I have listened to countless people who have tried in the past to step up and try to make a difference, but they are either met with resistance due to a certain stigma they might carry(too young, too old, HIV+, drag queen, etc), or theres never enogh interest in the project to get it moving, so people give up. During any public gathering I have attended within our community, I have seen a lot of separation based on what every person I talk to refers to as cliques. Theres no commingling amongts these groups. Most people say they dont know why this distance has formed, but most have accepted that this is just the way things are. I have been to other cities, and while there still is a lot of separation among social groups, I still have seen some higher level of cooperation when it comes to making a difference. I decided to start this project because I am looking to change the idea that we have to be separate to work on our causes. I didnt want to take away from any organization that already exists, either. I rather wanted to start a project within the community to get people involved in something outside of the causes we push forth in the LGBT community - but offer a space where we, as a whole, could work together and help others. I hope that by starting this project that we can work to break down the barriers weve built up and work to get people involved in making positive changes. I would love to see our current organizations involved in the process, and hopefully get some better teamwork going on. Over the next few posts I will dive further into some of the projects I outlined in my big post from Friday, but I hope you all take a moment to think about what this project stands for and give serious thought on helping to get things moving.
