I wanted to take this time to post something that so many people fail to remember while going on with their busy, daily life. As a friend to many employees at the local Boone County Animal Shelter (and Im assuming all shelters) and a Mother to a daughter who is also a p/t employee, its so important to realize that these employees have to work through daily emotions, some of which are brought outside of the workplace (nightmares, anxiety, stress). This little snippet of an article may help to understand and appreciate what these employees go through and how we can help them by understanding and appreciating the service that they provide for the individuals, the local County and our furry friends. PLEASE READ: We know from those who work in other jobs that confront trauma (such as firefighters, police officers, and ambulance crews) that the most effective way to prevent burnout is to acknowledge the depth of emotions that arise in response to your work. An intellectual understanding of the reasons for animal surrenders, animal neglect, animal injuries (especially ones that require euthanasia due to severe illness and/or injury) doesn’t make you immune from having feelings about the lives of so many animals. Animal shelter workers often feel that no one else understands. And in one sense, no one can completely understand an experience they have not had. But there are always people who are capable of empathizing and it is vitally important to connect with them and understand that they are human too and their jobs are extremely difficult. Thank you for taking this time to read this.
