I was a Freshman at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in my dorm - TopicsExpress

I was a Freshman at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in my dorm room the night John Lennon died. In the all male dorm music often drifted from our rooms, and often it was music provided by WFBQ 94.7 FM out of Indianapolis. I first heard the words from one of my dorm mates. He stood at the open door to my room and said, John Lennon has been shot. His eyes were misting up as he shared the shocking news. After I moved out of the paralysis of disbelief, I joined others in our resident assistants room. We all crowded in there together to listen to the breaking news. It was probably an hour or more before the news became official. John Lennon was dead. I could not believe it. I had never lived in a world where John Lennon wasnt alive and making music. I was born in June 1962. The Beatles recorded in the EMI Studios the same week I was born. By October 1962 they released Love Me Do, their first single and a No. 1 hit. Now he was dead. I was only 8 years old when the Beatles broke up. I heard the news of their break up on the radio and remember feeling sad, even then as a young boy. Now, at the news of John Lennons assassination, I felt as if my childhood was over. I felt like a part of me died. I didnt sleep that night. Many of us didnt. My roommate went to stay with his girlfriend. I sat in the dark of my room and listened to Beatles music all night long. The first song I played was George Harrisons While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I played that song every hour on the hour until dawn broke. On the 20th anniversary of Lennons passing, I was 38 years old. Me and two friends spent the entire day keeping vigil and playing Beatles music and videos. I said good bye one more time in a profound way to my past. But you really dont leave your past. It stays with you, The best parts I still carry with me. Sure theres old hurts with me too, but Ive grieved them properly. They are a part of me too. But one thing will always be true, The Beatles and their music will always have a special place in my heart and December 8th will be a day to remember that day John Lennon was shot to death by a deranged fan. youtu.be/F3RYvO2X0Oo
