I was asked by a newspaper publisher to write a gardening column. Not something I pitched, just landed in my lap. She wrote in an email, Would you be interested in writing a piece once a month from now until October, One Woman’s Garden? We feel you would be perfect for this as your passion for it is contagious.” At our last meeting, I apologized for the filth that was beneath my fingernails when I caught an editor looking at my hands. I left my garden in a hurry and threw on respectable clothing. I did wash my hands, but didn’t put forth much effort because I was in a hurry to get to the meeting. I simply stated that I lost track of time and thought it best to be on time rather than show up late with clean hands. If that is a display of passion, they ain’t seen nothing yet! I wrote back and said, “That sounds fun, sure. But could we name it something light and fun like Playing in the Dirt?” To which she said yes. If you have any ideas or gardening questions you think I should address, let me know, please. Kind of excited about this lil’ gig.
