I was asked to share a little about my Dad and honestly, well, Ive been putting it off for a few days. Why? How do you explain to people how important someone is to you? How do you make them REALLY get how incredibly wonderful someone is? And how you just wouldnt be the same without them? Here is my best shot: My dad, John Furio, came over to this country on a boat from Italy when he was very young. I believe 6ish. He learned the language, was an amazing Baseball player, worked like a dog to get everything he owned. He fell in love with my beautiful mama when they were just teenagers. He left for college and only lasted days because he couldnt stand being away from her. He left college to marry the love of his life before they were 20. He worked long hard hours to make ends meet so that she could stay home and raise their girls. He NEVER complained. Let me rephrase, the man NEVER COMPLAINS. He went on and bought some land with the little money he had so that his kids could grow up in a better environment than we were living in. He couldnt afford to pay someone to build their house, so he built it himself. All the mechanics - he did it. Roofing, electric, heat, carpentry, plumbing...yep he did it all. He would go to work at 6 am - 7pm and then come home and build a house. He took us to church every Sunday. He helped with homework...did I mention he is also brilliant?? He played catch in the yard. He worked like a dog for 45+ years. My parents now have 11 Grandchildren and 2 Great grandchildren. If it needs fixing - my Dad is there. If you need a shoulder to cry on - my Dad is there...there isnt anything you could ask both my parents for - that they wouldnt move heaven and earth to do. My dad elected to take his retirement early. Thank the Lord. He officially retired in March 2013. The joy my family has in getting to share so much more time with him is immeasurable!!. And we know - he is just getting started. We cannot wait to share with him all that life holds for our future. Thank you for taking the time to learn a little more about our Dad. He is simply put, a man who has completely lived a life of sacrifice. He was diagnosed in May 2014 with Esophageal Cancer. A total surprise to all of us. He has never been sick with much of anything in his whole life. After much research and prayer we decided he would get his treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He left for Mayo in July and began 6 weeks of Chemo and Radiation. He goes back for surgery in October to remove the esophagus in hopes of beating this cancer once and for all! Thanks to everyone who cared enough to support him. Your kind words, cards, donations and efforts will and have touched him in ways you cannot imagine. He isnt someone used to getting, he is used to the giving. Thanks for helping us turn the table for him!!!
