I was asked what I think about Eric Garner. Truth be told, this - TopicsExpress

I was asked what I think about Eric Garner. Truth be told, this was a tragic and unnecessary death, but this man was a) resisting arrest, and b) he was reported by others in the area for selling illegal cigarettes. Libertarian views aside about whether this should be a crime at all, you should not resist an officer if you want to avoid the strong arm tactics that US police officers are known for. Ive been to the US several times, and theres no doubt that the police are far more intimidating. The reasons for this are numerous, and some of it is to do with the fact that criminals in the US are some of the most violent in the world. Its not a job I would like to do, but I am not idealistic enough to think that the police are unnecessary. As a minarchist I do believe state police can exist. Furthermore, there is NO evidence that this was a racially motivated arrest - NONE whatsoever. Yes, it is an example of police negligence, and a very tragic one at that. But at times like this people need perspective, to avoid being dragged into leftist politics of divide and conquer.
