I was at the mall - 2.45, Id just had lunch and was returning to the car, coming up the escalators, when I heard a bang and a surprised yell from a few people. I looked out the window and saw some really intense winds blowing past. Also leaves blowing about in the mall which is really unusual. The power went out for a sec and I suggested to the person I was with we get going as if they were going to evacuate the mall, then we should get moving as the car park turns into a real car park (assuing they let you up there at all - turns out they did evacuate it a bit after we left so was a good move. Went up to the car park and looking out over Hornsby could see some bits of roof missing. Looked further west and could see bits of sheet metal blowing around in the air. Rubbish and crap and branches everywhere. Full on! Rang another friend Id just had lunch with who was at the train station and he said he had a chair go whistling past, and a big bang. My wife had told me there were trees down where she worked, so I headed up George St... saw the upturned demountable (and about 6 guys in hi-vis vests looking at it from some nearby steps. Saw plenty of roof stuff on the road as well as a tree down on a couple of cars. Weather was very calm and dry afterwards. Had to go and get the kids from school and then got a call from my friend at the Train station, who started walking to my place - the trains werent going anywhere. He took some photos on the way and tweeted them, which ended up being used across all of the news broadcasts and websites. Took Lesley an hour to drive 5kms from her work to home. Here in Hornsby Heights were having our council cleanup, so while there is plenty of junk out on the street it hadnt been touched up at all - very very localised in that strip from Hornsby Mall, heading west to old Hornsby. Home and Lit the fire now - nice to be home and safe.
