I was browsing through the forum named Multaqa Ahl at-Tafseer to get some suggestion regarding some books. Those who may not know this is one of the best forum that discusses knowledge regarding the Quran and many of the participants are big students of knowledge in their own rights. So I went to a post where a guy was asking what are the best books in a particular field of Islam (which was my question as well). A guy in his reply said this and I believe all of us who concern with Islamic knowledge should know. No doubt that telling what books are best in a particular field is not a matter to play with. The answer requires to meet three conditions in my opinion. Firstly, the answer should be given after reading almost all the books of that field so that it is a correct one. This is, if not impossible, very difficult indeed. Secondly, this verdict should come from a specialist (mutakhassis), who has perfected knowledge (mutqin) and an independent analyst (mujtahid) in the field in which the answer is sought. Thirdly, the verdict should come from a person who is just (munsif) and neutral with no vested interest (mutajarrid). We get to learn new knowledge everyday and the more we do that the more we understand how frivolous we are in our approach to ilm.
