I was chatting to a friend today about a close relative who has just being diagnosed with cancer and how it is affecting both them, their partner, their immediate and extended family and friends. What strikes me about these conversations is just how isolated everyone feels and how very frightened the person and partner naturally feel. Despite some ongoing remarkable recoveries it is a diagnosis we all are terrified to get and can and does change life dramatically. As a TCM practitioner, I often find myself biting my tongue during these conversations, as I know what wonderful research there is out there proving that acupuncture, moxa or even mycology can have on the recovery or capability to withstand treatments like chemotherapy, radiation etc.....However, not all oncology teams are supportive and that really bothers me, as surely the wellbeing of the patient is their ultimate aim and if they can get through their treatments with less side effects then their chances of a full recovery are higher, so why not use integrative medical models as they do in the East? Anyway, I wrote an article a few years ago citing the research available then..(I may update it soon) and here it is. If it was me, I would say everyone undergoing chemotherapy should use P6, a point that has been proven time and time again to be an anti emetic(stops nausea), so at least the post chemo experience may not be so harsh. That alone could make the difference of keeping the persons spirit and will together as we all know that when your stomach is not good, when you are vomiting and extremely nauseated that nothing feels right. Anyway, please share if you think my article may help someone. Plus, contact charity houses like ARC House in Dublin who do offer free acupuncture for people diagnosed with cancer alongside many other very valuable services. acupuncturecouncilofireland/introduction-to-cancer.html
