I was deeply saddened by a shocking incident this afternoon. Fear, panic and terror gribbed me when i saw a fellow human mishandled, mistreated and flogged by some military men soldeirs. The victims mistake that incurred a hot afternoon beatings from the soldiers was making a wrong turn on a highway. I know the tipper truck driver (victim) who was inhumanely disciplined was wrong according to the road safety rules, that did not call for such a bad treatment. Even a murderer would not be subjected to such a barbaric and callous act. As i watched the incident unfold, i regretted the day of the victims birth. Why on earth must a living rational creature suffer such savage, cruelty, wickedness, malice and torture? For Christ sake, he is human and have fundamental rights no matter his offense. In this instance, he committed no crime that deserved such a bitter treatment. For quite some time now, there has been unceasing maltreatment of individuals by military personnels in this country. This is not the first time, neither will it be the last i think. Must we sit and allow this unfair abuse and misuse of position by the military to continue? Must innocent people come under such inhumane treatment even if they are at fault. Aaah No! I believe, someone suspected of high treason if convicted will not be mistreated in the manner i saw today. Some things must be done right in this country. It is natural for me to be empathetic but the truth must not be swept under the carpet. After all, truth stands forever. What is the duty of the military? Should they take the law into their hands when no one is above the law. Some of them inflict undeserving pains on innocent persons and are left to go scot free. Which institutions duty is it to protect the rights of the ordinary Ghanaian who suffer such outrageous acts? I have grown to know this mantra, do before complain, associated with the military soldiers. Should this be allowed to persist? We need some education on our rights, responsibilities and the laws of the land. The National Commision for Civic Education is called to duty. It happened to an unknown fellow, you could be in the web of maltreatment by soldiers tomorrow. It is time we made known our worries and fight for our rights. Join me in my advocacy for RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE DELINEATION OF THE DUTIES OF THE MILITARY SOLDIERS.
