I was fortunate enough to see Rich Mullins in concert 3 times. The first time was when Amy Grants Unguarded tour came to Jacksonville, when he opened for her. The second was for one of the tours connected to The World As Best I Can Remember It and the last time was in 1994 at Atlanta Fest. The last 2 times I got to meet him, briefly of course. I never go to see him live again. 3 years later, I came home from work at CompUSA, and was told by Sandra that Rich had died. I remember dropping the milk I had brought home, in shock. That was 17 years ago this weekend, I feel the loss as much now as I did back then, maybe more, because as Ive gotten older, Ive come to appreciate not only the depth of the songs he wrote, but the words he spoke in concerts and interviews and the words he wrote in essays and magazine articles. We didnt just loose a great song writer that night, 3 days before Autumn, we lost a great thinker.
