I was going through my 1965 PGHS yearbook today and found this photo of Joan Baez, and started to wonder how I missed out on her coming to our school. Im wondering also which teacher might have organized what looks like an impromptu performance (Mr. Savo?). In any case her career skyrocketed starting in 1960, but of course, along with Ira Sandperl, was involved in the Institute for the Study of Non-violence during that time, holding seminars way out in Carmel Valley in a building that had formerly housed a manufacturing company that made a poison-oak treatment cream called So Help Me Hanna if my memory is correct. Before moving to the Valley a private home in Pacific Grove was used by the newly formed institute, and I remember that some members of the community had a FIT that something like that would be going on in our town--oh you know, zoning restrictions and all of that. --Joan, as you know, was also involved in human rights concerns, abolition of the death penalty, and the environment. Joan Baez lived briefly in a cabin in the Carmel Highlands and later a waterfront home in Pacific Grove which is now a vacation rental, according to what I just found on the Internet. --ANYWAY, does anyone remember her coming to PGHS and doing this little impromptu concert for some lucky class? Wish I had been in attendance.
