I was having a discussion on facebook recently with theologians from different parts of the world. (Seattle, Germany, Australia, Minnesota etc..) It seems that the new trend to discredit the bible is to attack its human vessels of authorship and their credibility. For instance things are said like, Paul was a sinful man just like me so his writings are no more important than my preaching. This would make sense if we simple throw out the way Christians have viewed Pauls writings for the last 1913 years. You see even 1st century Christians held Pauls writings as the Word of God. This is why the majority of them were passed around the Christian churches and were canonized around 200 A.D. Scripture and its 66 books, even before they were canonized, were considered the Word of God among the individual churches. To look back with a 21st century perspective and claim that some of the books of the OT are legend and not actual history as well as to say that one can discern what parts of the NT are applicable today and discard the rest takes an elitist arrogance that I cannot fathom. Montanism was an idea around the 2nd century that claimed to have divine revelation. They believed that the Spirit was still speaking. Which isnt blasphemous in itself however the elevated their revelations above the Word of God. In other words there was no standard for what was orthodox except what the church decided. Sound familiar? In this line of thinking all life and doctrinal authority came from the hierarchy of the church even if it contradicted the eyewitness testimony of such men as Paul, Peter, John Jude, James etc.. Beware and hold everything you hear from the mouths of preachers against scripture.
