I was in a conversation last week that probably got out of hand. It was on a very sensitive subject and the debate was rather complex. I could not really figure out how to explain myself. This weekend I was cutting some brush out from under some trees that had dozens of briars and vines growing up into the canopy. I grabbed a handful and started trying to pull them out. It was hard. Then I grabbed a single vine and pulled it. The vine came right on out. I then grabbed a briar. It was more difficult. I was stuck a bit. But the briar came on out with a tug. I was having great success trying to handle the vines/briars one at a time. Then I got greedy.... I grabbed several. They were so difficult to manage! So I went back to methodically grabbing each vine/briar and pulling it out. Eventually I accomplished my task. I then got to thinking, complex situations are the same as clearing out those vines and briars. By dealing with one problem at a time you can work through the issues and accomplish your goals. I think all too often we do as I was tempted to do with those vines. Grab a big handful and start pulling. We work hard. We try our best. But we make little or no ground.... That is until we step back, identify a problem, isolate it, and deal with it. Then we accomplish something.
