I was in a discussion the other night about the condition of acceptance of women into the game development industry, and women gamers at all. A handful of people seemed to think that this is just a problem you can sweep under the rug. A couple of others seemed to think the rest of us were suggesting that we somehow force women into the industry/entertainment (like, HOW would we do that anyway??). A lot of good points were made. Most were in agreement that a huge chunk of the solution would be to foster an open door environment to let women know that if they want to come in, theyre totally and equally welcome. At least one of the more vocal ladies in the discussion pointed out an apparent lack of female mentors to interested women...something I support wholeheartedly. While most everyone seemed to be on the same page by the time I left what eventually turning into a downward spiral of repeat episodes, the one thing that barely got touched on was HOW to foster a change of heart regarding the ill attitudes of women in the gaming arena. Its good that such a positive consensus could be met - identify that there is a problem at all, and that there is a healthy goal in mind. The difficulty will be in how to get those who are perpetuating the problem to recognize the problem AS a problem and see why they should change. I lightly, very lightly, touched on my faith as a Christian as what fueled my own thoughts on the matter (I didnt unpack it further than that). It all comes down to the foundation that our viewpoints are built upon. And when you have something very heavy built up already, its hard to lift it so you can slide a firm foundation under it. Somethings gonna have to topple...
