I was in the mall today, I dont know what I was doing there, I was - TopicsExpress

I was in the mall today, I dont know what I was doing there, I was just there, and I popped in to the little nail salon to get a pedicure (which I am very happy with, BTW). The experience reminded me of a story I heard on NPR about how so many Vietnamese women came to be in the nail business. Want to hear it? I knew that you would. In the 70s, a lot of Vietnamese refugees were relocated here and they were settled into camps in California. Actress Tippi Hedren (remember her from The Birds?) was a volunteer in one of the camps and the women there LOVED Tippis beautifully manicured fingernails. So Tippi asked her manicurist, Dusty, if she would come to the camp with her and teach the women how to do nails. Dusty taught, the refugee women learned. Pretty soon, the Vietnamese women were getting licensed, starting up businesses, opening schools and nail salons, making money and paying taxes (and many could not speak English). Today, 80% of the nail techs in CA are Vietnamese, and 45% are, nationwide.
