I was instructing my daughter about lying this evening and the Lord gave me a simple but effective way of explaining its harm. I said to her, in spirit, every time we lie (or sin or disobey) we injure both ourselves and the other person or persons involved. Then, also, the more we lie or sin or disobey, the more we injure ourselves and others so that we become quite damaged...not on the outside but on the inside. (Paul alludes to this in saying things like God whom I serve with a clear conscience, for every time we sin we damage the conscience and distance ourselves from God.) This goes along with the word of truth which says when we sow to the flesh we reap from the flesh corruption. Corruption means not healthy or proper, sick or damaged in the heart and the soul. Without a healthy heart and soul we cannot function properly or righteously and the results over time can become psychological disorders! The salvation of Christ restores healthy order and function to the heart and the soul but to sin , which includes sowing to the flesh is to create disorder and every evil thing. James 3:15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. Back to my illustration, I explained to my daughter that when we lie and do bad things we injure ourselves so that in time we are so badly damaged (corrupted in heart and soul) that we become blind to what is truly right or wrong, and we cannot think properly and correctly and we make bad decisions and etc. But... I said that just like when we get a little cut or sore, we can apply ointment and a bandage to help it heal and get better and like wise, if we tell a lie, we can help towards the healing and restoration of our health and others by confessing and apologizing. Romans 5:21so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Sin abounds in death and propagates death. Sin consumes what remains of life in a person unto corruption unto death. Death is not merely when the soul leaves the body but death is anti-life. It takes and consumes and corrupts. So then, when a person sins he is expressing death. Jesus came however for the salvation of all men so that we might no longer abide in and express death but newness of life. He came that we might have life and that, that life might increase to the over flow and propagation of life as the expression of life which is Christ Himself. This is why I sometimes emphasize that we must go deeper than simply right and wrong and begin to touch and to discern and to express the differences between what is of life verses of death. So then...we begin to see that lying, stealing, sinning, disobedience and all is the expression of death. Such a person is as a diseased leper who, upon contact with, projects death upon the other person.
