I was invited to the gala premiere viewing of Maratabat by my inaanak Arlyn dela Cruz, and to say I was pleasantly surprised will not do justice to the film. Arlyn has spent a lot of time covering muslim Mindanao as a journalist, both print and broadcast, and it was her experience there that moved her to write and direct the film. It chronicled the massacre that happened in Maratabat (not its real name) that included scores of journalists and followers covering the filing of candidacy of a rival candidate. The choice of the cast was inspired and the direction by Arlyn, considering it was her directorial debut could be ranked with the professionals. No dragging scenes, no overacting...a bane of most Filipino films.
