I was just listening to the song, Youre Overcomer by Mandisa. While listening, I was thinking about what it takes to be an overcomer. youtube/watch?v=b8VoUYtx0kw We have all faced things in our lives that we have had to overcome. It might be dysfunction at home or in the workplace, a physical problem, depression, financial difficulty, chronic health issues, the list is endless. The thing is, no one has a perfect life. Weve all heard the old saw, Into each life a little rain must fall. Some have weathered small, infrequent squalls while it seems that others are constantly besieged by storms of Biblical proportions. In Romans 12:21 we read, Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Sounds simple but when in the midst of the storm its not quite so easy. We feel helpless, alone, frightened, and overwhelmed. The Urban Dictionary defines an overcomer as: A warrior, someone who battles no matter what task is ahead, someone that not only regains strength from his weaknesses but also sees life in a way no others can. Someone that doesnt laugh at racism, someone who doesnt feel pain, someone who has been through it all, and did it with a smile on their face. The true definition of an overcomer is a warrior. I John 4:4 states: Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. That is the key! Greater is HE that is in us than he that is in the world. No matter what the situation, no matter what the circumstance of our life, we have Jesus on our side and He sits at the right hand of His Father in Heaven and is CONSTANTLY making intercession for us. He is literally a prayer away. It doesnt even have to be a fancy prayer. It can be as simple and short as Jesus, help me. You dont have to go through an ritual or say specific words. You are His child and a simple plea of help is all that is necessary to win the victory. No situation is hopeless when God is involved. God is the Master of the impossible situation. Have you ever used mustard seed in cooking? Mustard seed is extremely tiny...so tiny, in fact, that if you accidentally spill it on the floor (dont ask), it is a real chore to clean up. In Luke 17:6, Jesus tells us, And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. I dont know what a sycamine tree was but I would imagine it was a large tree for Jesus to use it in this illustration. And mustard seed, as such a tiny grain, as opposed to the tree, is a powerful juxtapostion in just how little faith we need in order to accomplish miracles. What do you need to overcome in your life today? It matters not what the situation is, what matters is that you bring the problem to Jesus and leave it in His care. Dont pick it up again. Take your hands off the situation and in FAITH, believing His Word and Promise, let Him handle it for you. I will leave you with a poem a friend gave to me about 25 years ago. I hope you enjoy it. As children bring their broken toys, in tears, for us to mend, I brought my broken dreams to God, because He was my friend. But then, instead of leaving Him, in peace, to work alone I hung around and tried to help with ways that were my own. At last I snatched them back and cried, How could you be so slow? And He looked at me with eyes of love and said, What could I do my Child? You never did let go! Have the faith of that mustard seed today. Give your problems to Jesus and become an overcomer.
