I was just reading an article on Dementia and Aromatherapy from The Fragrant Mind by Valerie Ann Worwood. It is interesting to note that the sense of smell is the last sense to go and that using familiar oils can stimulate their response. She suggests oils like Lemon, Lime, Nutmeg, Clove, Coriander, Black Pepper, Orange, Grapefruit Cinnamon and Ginger to stimulate their appetite and evoke memories. To calm restlessness she suggest Rose, Neroli, Lavender, Geranium Chamomile and Jasmine. You could make a room spray to freshen their room or do a relaxing hand massage. If you are a Dementia carer dont forget about you too! The level of stress and anxiety from dealing with this is high so make sure you look after yourself. Valerie suggests a blend of Geranium, Bergamot, Patchouli and Rose .
