I was just reminded why I am more than a little reluctant to try self-publishing. Im working with a good friend on self-publishing a couple of novellas and my learning curve most resembles a divot. Granted, small-press publishers cannot do much in the way of promotion (and major publishers spend a pittance of their advertising budge on new writers) but they do a number of other things and do them well. They may provide cover art, the do the formatting, and they deal with the distributors. None of these are things I can do as well as a professional. In a simpler time, I wanted to be a Renaissance Man, capable of handling almost anything, but Ive learned that, in an increasingly complex and often electronic age, Im lazy enough to want to just sit back and write my stories and improve as a writer.
