I was just thinking the other day about how Male Privilege works its way into almost every area of our lives. Men have grown up with a sense of entitlement and aren’t aware of how much space they take up in public, because they live in a world where they’re continually reminded that everything belongs to them. Conversely, women are taught to not take up space, but to be small, quiet and introspective. On public transport, this translates into shrinking into the smallest version of ourselves to reduce the space used, because that’s what women are socialised to do. Im not saying this should prompt an Us vs Them mindset. I believe in equal rights for men and women. I just think its important for the men in our lives to stop and think about the way theyve been conditioned to conduct themselves in public, and the implications these small, everyday microaggressions have on society at large.
